Saya,
Bebe! Bergabung dengan Taring Padi di bulan April 1999. Sejak saat itu sampai
sekarang aktivitas kesenian secara individu maupun kolektiv selalu bersama Taring
Padi. Tahun 2000 sampai akhir tahun 2002, menjabat sebagai Sekretaris Jenderal
Taring Padi. Seni Sastra, grafis serta bermusik menjadi aktivitas individu yang
sering saya lakukan di Taring Padi. Namun secara kolektif saya lebih banyak meng-organise
event acara untuk Taring Padi. Begitu juga dengan hubungan dengan organisasi serta
kelompok seniman lain yang ada di yogyakarta dan kota-kota lainnya, Jakarta dan
Bandung.

Padi

Taring Padi is an independent non-profit cultural community which is based on
the concept people's culture. Taring Padi is committed to using its artistic and
cultural pursuits to contribute actively to the democratisation process in Indonesia
and elsewhere. Taring Padi will continue to struggle for social justice and liberation
from oppression for all people, and the environment. Taring Padi's practical work
is never separated from our ideas/thought about social change. With that, our
praxis is always a dialectical relationship with the dynamics of the society around
us.
Community,
collectivity, and us
Human are social creatures whom are dependent on the
universe around them. To implement together, human need each other. Like in Indonesia,
collectivity is characteristic of society which is needed not just in day to day
living but also to implement social change. We live in collectivity and our daily
lives and work are based on peoples individual skills and enthusiasm.
Portable
canvas billboards
Capitalism and the state often make use billboards with
messages and propaganda to promote development programs and consumer products;
they intend to promote consumerism and influence people's critical thinking. This
why we need billboard that are made independently in order to offer perspectives
and ways thinking that are different to the discourses that are promoted bay the
state and owners of capital.
Street
posters
On our public walls we often find advertising or posters with the
colours, symbols and logos that represent political parties or other interest.
In contrast, rarely are there opportunities for society at large to reveal their
diverse interests. Without separating form and content, our posters are a form
of expression which aim to voice contemporary issues in our society and to generate
society's access and appreciation of graphic art form. Our street posters are
produced manually and simply without restrictions on number produced or who the
producer is.
Protest
Puppets
Artistic tradition in Indonesia continue to develop dynamically
and historically, wayang puppets is an artistic tradition which historically has
been used by power holder for legitimation where they are portrayed as the winner,
whilst the people are made out to be foolish and objects of jest. Protest puppets
are intentionally created not to conform to the tradition whereby the people are
always the losers but rather the reverse. The protest puppets are created simply
with materials that can be recycled, such as found cardboard, wooden or bamboo
frames. The protest puppets are used for standing demonstrations or as a portable
group that expresses a critical story regarding a social issue that needs to be
addressed.
Publishing
house
In the importance of conveying rational, objective opinion to be
facilitated by economical, creative, easy to access, easy to understand media
that doesn't try to 'lecture' people. We regard this very important, so that every
day life can be critiqued by everyone, without differentiating ethnicity, religion,
race, class, gender, or education, free, independent thought is something that
we need to liberate in everyone's head; from hegemony and intervention of the
state.
The
people's trumpet
Terompet Rakyat or 'the people's trumpet is an independent
collective zine used as a space for expression and interaction for everyone, by
anyone, and without cost. It maybe reproduced by anyone and distributed at their
will. Contribution may take any form, for example drawing, poetry, short stories,
cartoons, caricature, or opinions about whatever people want to voice. The people's
trumpet is produced by rotating team and published every month.
Actions/street
performance
We believe that different form of performative expression can
be conducted any where, not limited by space or time, and can be processed by
all, accessed by many and close to people basic theatrical instinct. It can also
serve as media for people to act out their grievance, to voice them and invite
others to join in looking for solution. This kind of expression can involve may
people and requires dynamic interaction from its participants, thus forms that
we regularly employ are street performance and direct street action.
Full
moon cultural evening
Cultural evening is conducted each month on the night
of the full moon and becomes the medium for critical artistic expression in any
form. This event is conducted collectively in a varying format, where ever; indoor
or outdoor.
Dendang
Kampungan
Dendang Kampungan was formed on the basic that it is a collective
band where the number of participant is not fixed throughout the momentum of each
song or gig. Songs are made by anyone who is encouraged and has the right to have
a creative role in the process of making the songs, for example the lyrics, rhythm,
or instruments to be used for the song. We don't recognize maker of songs because
most of songs are produced collectively and consumed anyway to voice response
to issues about struggles concerning humanity, and the environment.
