The
National Art Gallery of Malaysia presents a survey of the remarkable range of
aesthetic practices of 16 contemporary artists who have emerged on the Malaysian
and international art scene within the past 10 years in the exhibition Malaysian
Art Bow! in Gallery 1 from 10 July - 1 September 2004. This curation by guest
curator Valentine Willie features the works of Adeline Ooi and Bernard Chauly,
Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Anurendre Jegadeva, Bayu Utomo Radjikin,
Chang Yoong Chia, Diffan Sina Norman, Emil Goh, Fariza Isahak, Fariza Idora Alhabshi,
Jalaini Abu Hassan, Liew Kung Yew, Noor Mahnun Mohamed, Tengku Sabri Ibrahim and
Yee I-Lann.
In
an envirinment where social conformity has on occassions overwhelmed and stifled,
the 16 participating artists have boldly reached beyond the sometimes limiting
Malaysian ethos, trancending the constrarining forces of ethnicity and religion
to articulate their concerns over urgent issues...
