MURAL
EXHIBITION 'PERAHU KAMALAYAN' BY MATAHATI & ANTING ANTING

13
Disember 2004, Laman Balai Seni Lukis Negara.
'Perahu
Kamalayan':
Kamalayan
- is a Filipino word whose root word 'Malay' connotes a state of being profoundly
aware or concious. Filipino traces their ancestry mostly to Malaysian and Indonesians
who migrated to the Philippine island
in boats called Balangay. Subsequently the term Barangay now refers to community.
The mural uses this meaning to revive a spirit of community especially among the
downtrodden peoples of South East Asia, whose poverty and marginalization are
caused by the greed of big businesses and the neglect of corrupt goverments. The
mural depicts a community of South East Asian peoples on the boat sailing on the
trecherous waters of war, grred and corruption. it is the predominant reality
in our world today and the ultimate victims are the poor and marginalized majority.
Like Noah's ark, the mural envisions a reversal of the situation where the victims
are vindicated and victimizers are punished by drowning in the sea cahos they
themselves created.
Perahu
:
Menggambarkan
sekumpulan manusia yang menaiki sebuah bahtera berhijrah merentasi lautan untuk
mencari sebuah tanah persinggahan.
Mager Project :
Is
a residency exchange programme between two contemporary art group from the Asean
region. This project is supervised and organized by a local art group called MATAHATI,
to foster understanding about the growth and function of art group within their
societies and countries. MATAHATI hopes this project would open up new networking
and give a better chancefor the Asean art group to communicate amongst them, artistically
or ideologically, for a wider and better understanding of the local and regional
arts and cultures. This programme would also expose the artist and local community
about the similarities and difference in art forms brought in by foreign artists.
MAGER is based on the concept where MATAHATI invites an art group from one of
Asean countries to Kuala Lumpur to come together, to work, exchange ideas and
collaborate for a month. Within that period, both groups shall attend and participate
in various art activities such as art talks, workshops and discussions with local
artists and general public.
